Excitebike 64 is far more than a mash-the-A-Button racer. In fact, despite monster jumps that would make Robbie Knievel
blanch, this Pak tilts heavily toward the sim side of the racing equation.
Motorcycles can turn much more sharply than cars, so it's appropriate that play control feels very tight. Turns are smooth,
but never too sharp. The Z-Button turbo boost will quickly overheat your bike, so it's best to use it sparingly. However,
you should expect to squeeze the R Button frequently to drift through curves. Because a bike slows quickly slow after the
accelerator is released, braking is seldom necessary.

Despite the impressive controls, managing the bucking bikes shapes up as quite a challenge. It's easy to fly off the narrow
straightaways and hair-raising 90-degree turns. Compounding the challenge is the fact that your bike will spend lots of time
in the air.

The vertical factor literally gives a whole new dimension to the racing experience, as you'll have to carefully calibrate the
Control Stick to get just the right angle for liftoff and landing. The Rumble Pak does a great job of conveying the sense of
landing from a 30-foot ramp, but thankfully without the pain. Further proof that video games are better than reality!

Constantly moving up and down as well as forward puts big demands on a CPU's graphics processing capabilities, but
Excitebike 64 looks mighty good. Heavily mottled texture maps neatly convey the down-and-dirty look of your typical
motocross track. Guardrails and other track-side artifacts are fully rounded.
