The arcade version of San Francisco Rush
has been one of the best arcade racers for
quite some time now, but it's Nintendo 64
progeny may be even better. In fact, this title
is one of the best-ever home conversion of an
arcade title.
Like the PlayStation Tekken series which
offered ports that included new options the
arcade version never had, SF Rush features
considerably more gameplay than the arcade
original. Even though the Nintendo 64 port
looks far less polished than its predecessor,
and the sound is absolutely atrocious at
times, few racing games have ever offered as
much replayablility.
The key to SF Rush is that while its a racer, it
plays like an adventure game. Each track has been intricately designed
with
countless shortcuts and hidden areas throughout. Players can enjoy the
title
by just staying on the main tracks and honing their skills, but before
long,
most will find themselves attempting ludicrous jumps and deadly shortcuts
just to shave off a second or two from their score.
Each of these shorcuts have been created to offer players a difficult choice
between risk and gain. A shortcut that offers minimal gain is generally
easy,
but one that gives players a considerable advantage requires a tremendous
amount of skill. This makes every race highly strategic as players jockey
for
position and weigh the consequences of taking the truly dangerous side
routes.
Thankfully, the game is forgiving of accidents and poor decisions. When
a
player wrecks, the computer picks them up and places them right back into
the action. While this is certainly not realistic, it wisely encourages
players to
explore shortcuts they might not have risked otherwise.
The environments are made to make players feel like the worlds are incredibly
huge. After a player makes a particularly jaw-dropping jump over buildings,
trees, and bridges, they will find themselves landing somewhere in the
environment hundreds of yards away, but still in play.
San Francisco Rush plays like Mario 64 on wheels, by combining adventure
and racing together in one package. Rare has promised this kind of action
in
its upcoming title, Diddy Kong Racing, but SF Rush is the first racing
title to
successfully tie the two concepts together.
To add to this adventure game feel, the developer hid keys throughout each
circuit that players can find to reveal new cars, secrets, and tracks.
These
keys are almost unnoticeable during the regular races, but once players
start
looking, they will find the secret items hidden in incredibly clever areas.
Even after endless hours of driving around slowly in the practice mode
looking for secret areas, ramps and keys, players will find themselves
returning to the game and finding new secrets. Any developer looking to
create a solid arcade port should follow the high standard set by Atari
Games
on this title, by adding so many extras that even those who have mastered
the arcade version will want to play this game again and again.
Certainly this title is unrealistic, but anyone looking for pure street
racing is
missing the big picture. SF Rush is not intended to be a pure racing game,
but rather a wild arcade ride. High flying jumps and wild, out of control
maneuvers aren't very real, but they sure are exhilarating.
Sound is this title's worst feature without a doubt. The effects are sub-par
for
a racing title and the music is deplorable. Certain tracks are so bad that
the
player is better off with the sound turned completely off.
Even with the sound off, the action is more enjoyable than just about any
other racer for this or any other home system. Diehard racing purists will
undoubtedly dislike this racer because it doesn't play like every other
one
before it, but anyone looking for an absolutely enjoyable racing experience
could do no better than SF Rush.
